Mario Mercieca
Read biography
Mario Mercieca is the Secretary General of the Malta Handball Association, bringing together longstanding experience in club administration, a professional background in teaching and a practical commitment to developing Maltese handball. His involvement with Kavallieri Handball Club, where he has served as Secretary, has given him an understanding of the organisational work that supports players, coaches, officials and volunteers throughout a season.
Working at both club and national association levels, Mario’s contribution centres on the structures that enable the sport to function effectively. His experience connects the everyday needs of clubs with the wider responsibilities of the Association, including communication, registrations, competitions and the coordination of administrative processes.
Alongside this work, Mario is actively involved in developing the MHA’s digital systems. He has been driving improvements to the Association’s online portal, bringing together player and official registrations, fixtures, team sheets, transfers, licensing, officiating appointments and match information. This work aims to make essential services easier to access and reduce the repetitive administrative tasks faced by clubs and Association officials.
His approach is grounded in how these systems are used in practice. From checking whether a player appears correctly on a team sheet to improving the accuracy of match reports, Mario pays close attention to details that affect the experience of the handball community. He works to connect information across the Association’s activities, supporting clearer records, more consistent procedures and better communication.
As a teacher and sports administrator, Mario combines an educational perspective with hands-on organisational experience. His contribution to Maltese handball reflects the importance of the work carried out beyond the court: maintaining reliable systems, supporting those who deliver the sport and helping the Association respond to changing needs. Through his club involvement and national responsibilities, he continues to contribute to a more organised, accessible and sustainable future for handball in Malta.

Marylyn Agius is the Chief Match Officiating Officer of the Malta Handball Association. Her journey in handball began at the age of 12 as a player, and shortly afterwards she took up refereeing, developing a strong passion for the game and its different aspects. She was a candidate in the EHF Young Referees Programme and, in 2017, had the opportunity to serve as a delegate at the IHF Emerging Nations event.
In 2019, Marylyn successfully completed the EHF Delegates course in Balaton and has since been a delegate with the European Handball Federation. Over the years, she has gained valuable experience through nominations across European competitions, including the opportunity to serve as a delegate at a European final.
