Olympic Medallist Carlos Prieto delivers two-day coaching course

The Malta Handball Association this weekend hosted its Kindergarten Handball Coaching Course marking a further step in the implementation of its Masterplan in collaboration with the European Handball Federation.

The course was led by EHF Expert Carlos Prieto — an EHF Champions League winner and Olympic medallist — and combined both theoretical and practical components designed to equip local coaches and educators with the tools required to introduce young players to the sport effectively.

Following an opening day focused on foundational theory, the second day shifted emphasis towards practical application, centring on the Association’s youngest handball players. Participants engaged directly with the children in a structured environment, applying key coaching principles through drills, movement exercises, and game-based learning scenarios.

Under Prieto’s guidance, the sessions highlighted the importance of age-appropriate coaching methodologies, clear communication, and fostering a positive first experience in sport. The interactive format allowed attendees to translate theory into practice, reinforcing the role of engaging, player-centred approaches at entry level.

The course concluded as a highly practical and insightful weekend, underlining the Malta Handball Association’s strategic focus on building strong foundations within the sport and nurturing the next generation of players through well-supported, quality coaching.

“This weekend has been both engaging and highly interactive. The willingness of the Maltese participants to learn, adapt, and actively engage in the sessions clearly reflects a strong drive to develop and improve the sport. That mindset is essential at grassroots level, and it is very encouraging to see such commitment to building a solid foundation for handball in Malta.” – Carlos Prieto – Olympic Medallist and EHF Expert

The initiative forms part of the Association’s continued commitment to strengthening grassroots development and advancing coach education, with the support of the Maltese Olympic Committee and Sport Malta.
